Nightmare of You, particularly #5 when it speeds up

You look down at his sleeping figure:
Arms around your waist, head on the pillow beside your hip.
You wonder to yourself how this ever happened.
Nine months ago you didn't even know he existed,
Then a simple request to a friend for a date
To the homecoming dance brought him into your life.
The evening was pleasant, but nothing spectacular.
Two weeks later you find out he'd fallen for your mutual friend;
You shrug and give it up, he was only a one-time thing.
You've no claim over that of someone who knew him longer.
He's got a girlfriend now, it's neither of you.
You talk but find he's grown dull
How can two people with so much in common have so little to say?
Months go by in silence, his girlfriend's gone;
Even you knew that as he expressed his infinite love for her
That she wasn't psychologically or emotionally stable or good for him.
People in relationships are so blind to obvious things
One day he says "Hi"; you speak again.
Three weeks later some statement makes you comment
That his timing is lousy and you liked him months ago.
"Oh really?" he asks and admits he liked you too.
You wonder why he never said or did anything besides find another girl.
You don't take it seriously, it's only a crush on his part;
He'll get over you soon, or fall for someone else as your friend points out.
The weeks go by, you get bored and start to flirt;
He says he's shy so you back down.
Plans to meet, plans broken by him;
You sat at home all day.
A call someday later:
He'd been in town, You'd been in his.
You probably passed each other on the way there
"When should we meet?"
You pick a few days, they fall through:
Car problems, parent problems, gas prices.
"On my birthday, I'll come up," he says;
So you make no other plans.
He calls with an excuse.
You demand he make a decision
And a stand. He made a plan;
He should keep it, and let no one stop him.
He pauses and says he'll call.
You spend the day finding things to do,
Go and get new makeup for your movie date.
Of course he's late/(lost), and you aren't going alone;
He's brought friends you've never met.
They flirt with you, you flirt with them;
In the theatre you bring your attention back to him.
You make it up with more affection and attention
the next day when he comes up for a swim.
With some encouragement from his friends,
You kiss his cheek, make him blush, and run away.
That weekend in his car you find protection/(comfort) in his arms;
By the time you are at his house you've
Made progress. The movie's ignored for kissing
And entangled hugs on the couch.
Two weeks later you attend an outdoor concert
After breakfast and walking hand in hand.
A day together and you're aglow by his presence.
That night lying beside him, you think your life complete,
And your happiness has finally reached its peak.
Soft kisses accent/(confirm) your hopes.
A month later you are sitting up in bed,
Contemplating how a one-time thing went from a crush
To "no feelings for him" to "Hmm, this could be fun"
To "Oh-my-gosh, this could really last"?
He stirs in his sleep and opens his eyes slightly
And lifts them up to yours.
You lean down and kiss him
Then settle under the covers,
Thinking that sometimes you find what
You need when you aren't looking for it
After over-looking it many times before.
